Actor and comedian Tõnis Niinemets, who attended the program “Hommik Anuga” with Kait Kalli this Sunday, said that he likes to be brave enough to say things that annoy him.
Last December ETV broadcast the program “Kinoteatri öhtune vönd”, in which the creators of Kinoteatri, among others Kait Kall and Tõnis Niinemets, looked back on the year 2023. The program dealt, among other things, with overwork , about what happens in Nursipalu, about domestic violence and Estonians’ love for alcohol.
Niinemets said there is a prejudice among comedians that everything they do must always be funny. “If this moment isn’t there, you have the feeling that something is wrong now, as if you can no longer talk about serious issues,” he argued, and acknowledged that in the last two years, when society has been shaken both by war who from economic difficulties, have become more easily irritated by humor.
“I can understand people for whom the Kinoteatr show wasn’t funny. In fact, it wasn’t funny for the most part, and it wasn’t meant to be funny, we didn’t set out to simply have fun,” he said.
Kait Kall stressed that he is a comedian who avoids making jokes on social media, because everything that is posted on the internet stays there. “We can do anything in the theater and then we can say that the person has misunderstood. The theater is a safe place, in the sense that we can say whatever we want every night, and it will stay there. But in the media, it’s like that maybe they run everywhere. I have afraid to joke publicly in this sense,” he admitted.
Niinemets said that it would be easy and comfortable to be an actor who does not comment on what is happening around him, does not state his point of view and is not critical. “I don’t like that comfort, I like being in an uncomfortable place in that sense. I like having the courage to say things that are disturbing. And if it bothers someone else, that’s completely acceptable,” he said.
