North Korea fired several hundred projectiles in the direction of the South Korean islands

“North Korea fired about 200 projectiles near Yeonpyeong Island,” a South Korean Defense Ministry official said, while Yeonpyeong officials told AFP that civilians had been asked to evacuate.

Shortly after, residents of Baengnyeong were also asked to evacuate.

“We are sending out evacuation warnings right now,” a Baengnyeong official told AFP, adding that he had been told the South Korean military would soon conduct a naval drill.

The shooting follows North Korea’s warnings that the country is building its military arsenal to be ready for a war on the Korean Peninsula at any moment.

North Korea’s artillery fire near two border islands is a provocative act that must be stopped, South Korea’s Defense Ministry said, warning that Seoul will take appropriate measures in response.

“This is a provocative action that threatens peace on the Korean Peninsula,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement, urging Pyongyang to immediately stop such actions.
