North Korea plans to launch three more spy satellites

During the five-day meeting that ended Saturday, Kim said the moves by the United States and its followers against North Korea this year were unprecedented, pushing the country to the brink of nuclear war, he reported state news agency KCNA.

“The difficult situation requires us to accelerate our work to acquire overwhelming military response capability and complete and perfect military readiness to suppress all kinds of provocations by enemies in one fell swoop,” Kim said, according to KCNA .

In addition to the reconnaissance satellite launched in November, three more satellites are scheduled to launch next year. Authorities have also been ordered to produce more nuclear weapons and develop various types of modern unmanned combat devices such as armed drones and powerful electronic warfare devices, KCNA said.

According to observers, the country’s goals for 2024 indicate that it wants to increase its influence in diplomacy in view of the US presidential elections next November. They believe Kim might offer to stop North Korea’s tests and take other steps in exchange for sanctions relief, but he has no plans to completely abandon his developing nuclear arsenal.

South Korea’s spy agency said last week that North Korea will likely launch military provocations and cyberattacks ahead of South Korea’s parliamentary elections in April and the U.S. presidential election in November.

Faced with growing confrontation with the United States and its partners, North Korea has sought to strengthen cooperation with Russia and China. Russian support allowed North Korea to launch a spy satellite into orbit for the first time, according to South Korean officials. Many experts are skeptical about the satellite’s ability to produce militarily significant high-resolution images, but South Korean Defense Minister Shin Wonsik said Russia could help North Korea take detailed satellite photos.
