The kindergarten place fee increases automatically in municipalities where the place fee is linked to the minimum wage. In 2024 the minimum wage will rise to 820 euros, and therefore parents will also have to pay more for a place in kindergarten. The spot commission is calculated as a fixed percentage of the minimum wage, and this number varies from location to location.
According to the law, the amount of nursery school fees can reach a maximum of 20% of the minimum wage. Next year the municipality will be able to charge up to 164 euros a month for a nursery place. This seat fee applies from next year, for example, in the municipality of Raasik.
In most municipalities, however, the tourist tax is much lower. In the municipality of Tartu, parents pay an amount equal to 8% of the minimum wage for a place in kindergarten. Even if it does not reach the maximum allowed by the state, the fee for a kindergarten place in the municipality of Tartu will rise to 65.6 euros next year. The minimum wage is also linked to nursery fees in the parishes of Anija, Jõhvi, Elva, Nõo, Harku and Kohila.
In some areas, the nursery place fee is increasing despite the fact that the place fee is not linked to the minimum wage. In the municipality of Rakvere, for example, next year the fee for a place in nursery schools will increase from 30 to 40 euros. The city administration explained that the fee for the nursery place was last changed three years ago and since then the costs of running the nursery have increased significantly.
A similar decision was made by the municipality of Jõgeva, where the cost of the seat will increase by five euros to 45 euros. According to the local municipal government, they wanted to increase the amount due to inflation, the increase in the minimum wage and the increase in various economic costs. In the municipality of Jõgeva, the fee for a kindergarten place is not even linked to the minimum wage.
In some municipalities, where the nursery school fee is not linked to the minimum wage, it has been decided to leave the amount unchanged. The year 2024 can be welcomed with a peaceful heart, for example, by parents from the municipality of Saaremaa. In Kuressaare the fee for a place in kindergarten remains 53 euros, while outside the city the fee is 18 euros.
The municipalities of Hiiumaa, Lüganuse, Kambja and Lääneranna also have no intention of increasing the fee for a place in kindergarten next year.
