The Irishman is one of the biggest stars of all time in the UFC, but last fought in July 2021 when he broke his leg in a match against Dustin Poirier. The continuation of 35-year-old McGregor’s sporting career was in doubt, but now it is clear that he will return to the ring.
McGregor, in his own way, announced the matter on social media. “Ladies and gentlemen, happy new year to all of you. Announcing that the most powerful return ever of the infamous Conor McGregor will take place on June 29th fight weekend in Las Vegas. Opponent, Michael Chandler. Mr. Chandler’s weight, 84 pounds,” he said, laughing.
It can be read that McGregor, who previously fought at lightweight, will make his debut in a new weight category. McGregor’s return was prompted by the fact that last fall he rejoined the US anti-doping program: according to UFC rules, an athlete must be on the USADA list for at least six months.
