Official: Henderson, who left Saudi Arabia, returned to Europe – Soccernet.ee

England team assistant captain Jordan Henderson (33) has left Saudi Premier League club Al-Ettifaq and joined Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam.

The former Liverpool midfielder, for whom the Saudi club paid 14 million euros, signed a three-year contract with Al-Ettifaq last summer. According to The Athletic, the man earned more than 800,000 euros a week. Al-Ettifaq agreed to terminate the Englishman’s contract early so he could shake hands with the 36-time Dutch champions.

“I want to thank the club, the fans and all the people who gave me this opportunity [mängida Saudi Araabia kõrgliigas]”Henderson said. “I wish them the best and the best luck for next season. A lot of work is going on there and I know it will be useful in the future.”

Ajax manager John van ‘t Schip told the club’s website that they wanted an experienced midfielder with leadership qualities. “Also due to injuries, we were looking for someone who could play straight away. Henderson is that type of player. His arrival adds a lot to our team, both on and off the pitch. A player of his caliber will be extremely valuable to our young players .”

The manager continues: “He’s an English international. He won the Champions League with Liverpool and many other titles. I’m happy he’s here and I think he’s very positive for the club.”

It’s been a difficult season for Ajax. After 17 rounds they occupy fifth place in the table, leaders PSV are 23 points ahead of them. Henderson could make his debut in Sunday’s league match against RKC Waalwijk.

According to the BBC, Henderson left Al-Ettifaq amicably, and his departure was quite positive for the Saudi wallet.

Henderson, who grew up in Sunderland, also represented Coventry during his career. His most successful spell was at Liverpool, where the 81-time international recorded 492 games, 33 goals and 61 assists. With Liverpool he won a Champions League, a Club World Cup, an English championship, an FA Cup and two League Cups. In 2020 he was chosen as the best English footballer of the year.
