Ollie: Estonian song made a big difference in my life | Music

On the last morning of the year, the musician Ollie, alias Oliver Mazurtžak, visited the studio “Hommik Anuga”, introducing himself to the general public with this year’s participation in the Estonian Song Competition. The success was surprising and made 2023 very unpredictable, according to the musician.

In the debate over this year’s Eurovision winner, Ollie is of the opinion that Käärija should have won. “I think people liked “Cha Cha Cha” more. You could see it in the vote. Loreen won a little thanks to the jury,” thought Ollie, who has now included Estonian versions of both songs in his repertoire. “Estonians definitely like them more, in some ways, than, for example, Venom,” she said.

Eurovision de jure AND Indeed Ollie didn’t take the secret recipe from the winning songs. “One of my biggest role models, Rick Rubin, said that the audience comes last. If you take that approach and do your thing the way you really love to do it, somehow you actually talk to people more. I learned,” Ollie said.

The musician cannot yet give a full concert with Ollie’s songs, because there are four of them, but the song list also includes covers. “The ones I really like. One day I’ll definitely be able to fix the fact that half the songs aren’t covers, only 1-2 songs are covers,” Ollie said, but added that that’s why he doesn’t cry to himself. cushion.

By now Ollie can be a full-time musician. “I admit that a few years ago I drove a taxi for a while, but it was the time of the coronavirus and a very difficult time. There were also some lessons. I realized how difficult it is to put bread on the table. What I do now is a brutal privilege. For me, I’m lucky to be able to do it and I’m extremely grateful for it,” Ollie said.

2023 for Ollie was like driving on very thin ice in a car driven by a gorilla. “You never know what can happen. /…/ Unpredictable, because it was a very sudden turning point for me. Eesti Laul made a very big turning point in my life. Suddenly I became someone. /…/ All ‘Suddenly I was blown away in front of everyone and people reacted. I had been a producer on Eesti Laulu before, but I was still like a background force there,’ Ollie explained and added that now the limelight shines on his face .

It’s stressful, but it feels good, according to Ollie. “Before Eesti Laulu, I had never had a situation like this, for example, where I go to the Myfitness changing room and get an offer for a concert from there. Never, but somehow it happened now,” Ollie laughs.

Ollie will also participate in the Estonian Song in 2024. He didn’t plan it right away, but when the competition story was ready, his intuition told him he had to go. While the success of Ollie’s story is expected internationally, he himself has received extensive feedback. “Inevitably, I do a job where you have to deal with this fire, where people think all sorts of things,” Ollie explained, adding that to deal with it, he just needs to be sure of what he’s doing.
