PHOTO | Check out the evidence! The year of the European Capital of Culture will begin tomorrow in Tartu with a grand inauguration ceremony

The Capital of Culture team shares ten tips on how to enjoy outdoor parties in January.

  • Where will the opening ceremony take place?

  • The opening ceremony concert stage is located on the Emajõe River embankment, which is located on the Atlantis side of the bank between the landmarks of Tartu, Karsilla and Rahu Bridge. Furthermore, a 35 meter long river barge, the largest river barge sailing in Estonian inland waters, is also used as a river platform.

  • Where can I see all this?

  • You can watch the show on the shore, next to the Vabadus bouistee, where separate screens have also been installed for this purpose.

  • After all, it takes place outdoors. What do I wear and how do I behave outdoors?

  • From Tartu 2024, mountaineer Kunnar Karu recommends the following:

    *Sleep well the night before.

*Constantly wiggle your toes and fingers: Even if you are standing, you can still wiggle your toes in your boots and your fingers in your gloves. This can even be done without others noticing.

*Dress in layers: if you move you can remove a few layers to avoid sweating; if you stop and wait, you can wear a few extra layers.

    * Always choose long, warm underwear as your bottom layer.

*If possible, cover your head, hands, neck and face from the cold.

*Prefer winter boots: the thicker the sole, the better.

*Come with a positive attitude, even if the weather forecast calls for cold weather. A positive mind helps you tolerate the cold better.

  • I understand that it is a beautiful and crowded event. I, however, am disabled and accessibility is a problem for me. What should I do?

  • On site you will be able to observe the opening ceremony from the grandstand for disabled people, equipped with seats and wheelchairs for people with mobility difficulties. The disabled grandstand is accessed from the Vabadus bouistete sidewalk. The transition from the driveway to the sidewalk may be hindered by a high curb. The closest disabled parking spaces are located next to the Tartu market building and behind the town hall building. A parking card valid for a vehicle of a disabled person guarantees free parking in the paid parking area of the city of Tartu. In private car parks it is necessary to follow the established procedure.

An accessible toilet is available in the Tartu Market building for disabled people and families with small children. Furthermore, disabled toilets are located on the 3rd floor of the Tartu department store and for a fee in Tartu Central Park (Küün street side). Since the event takes place outdoors, everyone is advised to dress in layers, wear a warm scarf, gloves and wool socks.

  • How do I get around the city center?

  • To avoid traffic jams and parking problems in Tartu on January 26, the Tartu 2024 team recommends getting around the city on the day of the opening celebrations by city buses, which are free for everyone. Special bus 24A departs from the bus stop at the Lõunakeskus entrance No. 5 and runs on the ERM-Kesklinn-Lõunakeskus-ERM route from 8pm to 3am on 26-27.01. People coming from other directions are served by special line 24B, which runs from 8pm to 3am on the ERM – Annelinn – ERM route, and 24C, which runs from 10pm to 3am on the ERM – Kesklinn – route ERM. More detailed information on special lines here.

Those coming from the directions Võru, Põlva, Valga, Tallinn can leave their vehicles in the Lõunakeskus car park, from where they can reach the city center with the special buses running for that day.

On January 26, several car parks in the city center are closed: the market building car park is closed from 4pm to midnight; Vanemuine St. 15 car park – 2pm-12am; Narva mnt 2, 2e, 2c car parks will remain closed. Car park A (temporarily closed on 26.01 from 19:00 to 21:30), car park B, car park C and Tartu Lumepark car park are open at the ERM. You can park in these car parks for free. More detailed information on rates and parking in Tartu can be found on the city’s website. A parking card valid for a vehicle of a disabled person guarantees free parking in the paid parking area of the city of Tartu. In private car parks it is mandatory to respect the parking regulations.

  • Where can I find a drinking bottle?

  • All the bars in the city center offer a hot drink. For this, bring your own cup or ask for your drink in a reusable Ringo cup. The return tents are located on the Town Hall square and Vabaduse avenue. Ringo cups are rented for one euro. After use you can get a refund. The return tents are visible, you will definitely notice them. Another alternative is to conveniently store the cap in the Ringo container. You can find the latter in yellow colors. Additionally, non-alcoholic glögg is sold on Vabaduse Boulevard. The deposit for Tops is 1,-. You can also pay by card.

The evening continues with a parade full of surprises, led by the mutant car Reisiva Siili to the after-party accompanied by loud music and dancing. Come and take part in the coolest procession of the year, where Púr Múdd and DJ Magnuss Eriņs will make people tap their feet. Many more surprises await the processions on the way to the ERM.

During the procession from Vabaduse Boulevard to ERM, celebrants can also take the bus with Släp stickers! (a city bus specially designed for Tartu), which leaves at 8.30pm from Vabaduse Boulevard and moves with the procession to the ERM. Priority is given to people with mobility difficulties, the elderly and children

The opening ceremony telecast can be seen on ETV starting at 7 p.m. The live broadcast on ETV will begin at 7.00 pm, while on Jupiter TV you can follow the opening ceremony with interpretation in sign language.
