PHOTO | Eesti Laulu’s sketches ask with a smile: what is Estonian culture?

The short film screened in the semi-final of the Estonian Song, described by director Rene Vilbre, talks about Estonians and culture through humor. “Our work, in the key of the capital of culture, asks with a smile, what is this culture really? Are many people gathered in one place loudly thinking about a hyper-realistic postmodern dance with folk songs, or is the culture of Estonians peace, solitude, being comfortably alone in the forest?”

Both aspects, both the charm of solitude and a crowded party, are represented in the story dedicated to Tartu, which holds the title of capital of culture, and to southern Estonia. For example, on one day of filming, almost 40 people of very different nationalities arrived at the television house. And on the other hand there are scenes in which a pause says more than a thousand words, because as the director says: “Even the pause laughs, smiles and giggles to itself. Whoever bothers to listen to the pause will better understand the soul of an Estonian!”

In the semi-final of the Estonian song, the song will be performed in three parts. According to Vilbre, it is a short film and not the TV sketches that viewers remember from before: “This time we tried to approach the idea from the aesthetic point of view of the film. More time will be contained in ten minutes than circumstances had allowed before . Since we only did one thing and with a professional film crew, the pleasure of doing it was different.”

The Estonian song will be held on January 20 in the sports hall of the University of Tartu. Doors open at 5.30pm Before the semi-finals there will be an autograph session with the artists from 6.00pm to 6.30pm. ETV will begin broadcasting live at 6.45pm with a glamorous pink carpet party. Live coverage of the competition will begin at 7.15pm.
