The Christmas markets in Brussels and Tallinn have repeatedly been named the best in Europe and the world in the compilation of various Christmas market rankings. The history of both is centuries old with some interruptions, attracting both locals and tourists to explore them every year. For example, the number of visitors to the Brussels Christmas market already reaches 3.5 million people, in the case of Tallinn it is many times lower, ranging between 500,000 and one million visitors.
While the Tallinn Christmas market has remained mostly in the center of one place, the town hall square, in Brussels it extends into the heart of the city, occupying at least ten different locations. Among them are St. Catherine’s Square, De Brouckère Square, Boulevard Anspach, the square in front of the Brussels Stock Exchange building and the Town Hall Square. While the number of stalls at the Brussels Christmas market has risen to 240, around a hundred remain in Tallinn.
