Police are investigating alleged flag burning in northern Tallinn. Eyewitness: Like an otherworldly experience

“Today I saw the Estonian flag lit up on the street near my house. I saw it catch fire from a corner and then turn around. Like an other-worldly experience,” he wrote on Facebook yesterday.

The field director of the Lääne-Harju police station, Laura-Liis Tamm, told Delf that the police have so far been in contact with the woman and are working to find out the circumstances.

“According to the woman, on Saturday she saw a group of people moving in northern Tallinn behaving arrogantly and loudly, and one of them set fire to the small Estonian flag he was holding in his hand,” Tamm continued.

The camp manager said that a person can be held responsible for insulting the Estonian flag as the official symbol of our country. “If you see something like this, you should always call 911.”

The Criminal Code states that tearing down, breaking, desecrating or otherwise desecrating the Estonian flag, coat of arms or other official symbols, as well as desecrating the national anthem, is punishable by a fine or imprisonment of up to one year.
