POSSIBLE CONNECTIONS OF THE BROADCASTING COMPANY WITH RUSSIA ⟩ The Tartu cinema has decided to cancel the screening of the awaited film

“Last week we received the news that Lithuanian cinemas decided not to screen the film “The Boy and the Heron”, because it is suspected that the film rights came to the Baltics through a Russian-linked company. After Having studied the situation we have also come to the decision that unfortunately we cannot screen the film “The Boy and the Heron”, we read in the announcement. Tartu Electric Theatre.

“After meeting with the Estonian film distributor, we believe that their desire to distribute the film in the Baltics is sincerely motivated by good intentions and that they have no direct ties with Russia. Unfortunately, the chain of commercial relationships for film rights is often long and, in our opinion, this time there may be a link at the end of the chain that is connected to Russia. We therefore believe that we cannot screen this particular film with a pure heart.”

Elektriteater adds: “Behind this whole situation lies a bigger, long-term problem, which is that the Estonian region’s film rights are still being sold together with Russia and surrounding countries as a single package, as if the Soviet Union still exists. “International film distribution should realize this and change. We are sad that Hayao Miyazaki’s long-awaited new film will not be shown in our cinema and we apologize to everyone who has been waiting for the film.”

The Electric Theater has promised to refund money to all ticket buyers who have already managed to purchase a ticket for Miyazaki’s film.

Cinematic friendship takes a more sympathetic attitude towards “Boy and Heron” and its Baltic distributor and screens the long-awaited animated film. Sõprus writes on Facebook: “As many of you have already read, there is a dark cloud over the distribution in local cinemas of Hayao Miyazaki’s new film: there are rumors that the film will be distributed in Baltic theaters via Russia, and the ticket revenue will move from here to the east. Yesterday, together with Elektriteatr, we had a conversation with the distributor, during which we discussed the rights of the film and its arrival in Estonia, and as a result Kino Sõprus decided to screen the film .»
