Preparations for the Paris Olympics have caused serious environmental damage in Tahiti

The topic has forcefully entered the agenda, because last week a lot of environmental damage was caused during the preparation works for the Tahiti Olympics.

In fact, a construction barge destroyed much of the Teahupo’o reef when a 14-meter-tall aluminum referee tower was installed in the sea.

After construction work was halted due to damage to the coral reef, the question has been raised whether next year’s surfing competitions should take place on the Pacific island of Tahiti.

Moetai Brotherson, president of French Polynesia, later questioned whether construction should go ahead as Lacanau, near Bordeaux, and La Torche, in northern France, expressed interest in hosting the surfing competition.

However, Sports Minister Oudea-Castera rejected the idea of changing the venue of the competition.

“No, there is no plan B,” he told reporters. “We are on a really right path. We are on the right path to create a new referee tower that is in line with local wishes.”

The minister admitted that the preparatory work for the construction of the tower leaves much to be desired and that efforts are now being made to avoid this mistake at all costs.

“It wasn’t done properly,” he said. “And unfortunately it has damaged the reef, which is obviously very unfortunate.”
