Putin ordered the hunt for assets of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union

Late on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the allocation of funds to organize real estate searches abroad and to ensure the registration of Russian property rights. According to Bloomberg, however, the documents do not show either the amount of the budget or the type of property requested.

At its height, the Russian Empire reached the territories of present-day Poland and Finland, as well as the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The empire collapsed under the pressure of the First World War and the Bolshevik revolution of 1917, led by Vladimir Lenin, which led to the birth of the communist state.

However, the Soviet Union, formed in 1922, conquered much of the empire’s former territory during World War II, with the exception of Poland and Finland. The Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, when the Baltic, Caucasus, Ukraine, Belarus and Central Asian countries gained independence.
