Pyrotechnic warfare and flying bottles: Lazio’s fiery derby triumph overshadowed by fans’ carelessness (Atalanta overthrew AC Milan) – Soccernet.ee

Rome’s Lazio celebrated the club’s 124th birthday yesterday and celebrated it today by eliminating its bitter rival AS Roma in the quarter-finals of the Italian Cup.

The start time of the derby was brought forward to a working day to reduce the risk of conflict that always accompanies this heated confrontation. Despite this, a pyrotechnic war broke out in the stands of the Olimpico even before the kick-off, when Lazio fans stormed the Roma fan sector, set fire to a scarf belonging to a Roma fan and exchanged flaming rockets and gym bombs with their enemies.

It took longer for the tours to develop on the ground. The previous three Roma derbies had seen a total of just two goals (both in favor of Lazio), and this time too the first half heralded a very tight evening.

The scoring atmosphere was only created at the start of the second half, when Roma goalkeeper Rui Patricio needed a quick reaction to respond with a one-handed save from Matias Vecino’s header. After the ensuing corner, Dean Huijsen arrived late and caused a penalty against Taty Castellanos, which was also converted by Mattia Zaccagni. Lazio then took control of the match and came close to scoring on several occasions, but the margin remained minimal.

In the 75th minute the Lazio fans stand out with a new bravado, which could also cost the club a stiff fine. A bottle thrown by fans hit replaced Roma midfielder Edoardo Bovet in the neck. The young player didn’t make a big deal out of it.

Roma, chasing the equalizer, managed to apply pressure before the end, but 22-year-old Greek goalkeeper Christos Mandas, making his debut in front of the Lazio goal, held out in the decisive moments. In the extra minute, Romelu Lukaku’s scissors kick flies over the goal.

During extra time the tension also exploded on the pitch, when following various conflicts both the Lazio substitute Pedro and the Roma substitute Sardad Azmoun were sent off the pitch with a red card. Roma captain Gianluca Mancini was also sent off after the final whistle.

On Thursday evening Juventus and Frosinone will decide Lazio’s opponent in the semi-final. In the second semi-final, Fiorentina e Atalantawho led 2-1 in Wednesday’s final match B.C Milan fan.
