Ratas: Kallas will be the commissioner of the next composition of the European Commission | Estonia

Former President of the Center Party and former Prime Minister Jüri Ratas believes that Kaja Kallas will leave the post of Prime Minister when the name of the candidate for Commissioner of the European Commission is agreed in the Reform Party.

Commenting on Andrus Ansip’s words that the leader of the Reform Party should be replaced, Ratas said that the fight will take place in the Reform Party, which was suspended at the end of February 2022.

“If you look at the media image of the time, there were also a lot of tensions within the Reform Party, especially between former president Andrus Ansip and current president Kaja Kallas. But then a full-scale war broke out and Of course, at that moment we had to stick together. I think what happens today is a continuation of what happened before.”

Ratas said many senior Reform Party politicians fear the party’s support is exceptionally low.

“Their voters do not approve of such a policy. And this naturally leads to a power struggle within the party, where they want to see a new leader. And it is clear that, from today, the new president of the Reform Party is also the new Prime Minister.”

According to Ratas, Kallas’ resignation from the position of party leader and prime minister is foreseeable once the name of the next candidate for commissioner of the European Commission has been agreed within the Reform Party.

“I am quite convinced that it will be Kaja Kalla. From the position of prime minister to the European Commission. All member states have this post. And as a rule, former prime ministers can be part of the Commission with the status of vice-president.”

According to Ratas, the Reform Party is such a professional party that it can agree on these issues.

“So I believe it is not directly linked to the European Parliament elections. Rather, it is linked to when it is most appropriate for the government to nominate a commissioner candidate for the next commission.”

Estonian Kadri Simson, Ratas’ party colleague, is currently a commissioner in the European Commission, whose mandate expires in autumn 2024.
