RIHO TERAS ⟩ If Putin loses Crimea, will a nuclear weapon explode? Reality and consequences

Russia has repeatedly threatened to use nuclear weapons after a large-scale attack on Ukraine. This intimidation has certainly influenced many journalists in the West and probably politicians too. This happens even now, when it cannot be ruled out that, losing Crimea, Putin will launch a tactical nuclear weapon (see for example Daily Mail, December 3). But that doesn’t mean that using a nuclear weapon is necessarily realistic.

Russian threats are nothing new in themselves. At the time when the Soviet Union was at its military peak, Europe and the United States lived in fear of nuclear war. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union it was feared that this would lead to the uncontrolled spread of nuclear weapons. The above does not mean that the use of nuclear weapons is ruled out in the future, but it shows that Russian threats are a conscious tactic to play on the memory and fears of citizens of Western countries.
