Russian riot police staged a “preemptive” raid on a gay club in Yekaterinburg

According to the press service of the Yekaterinburg branch of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, during a “preventive” raid, the police checked the documents of more than a hundred people and confiscated unlabeled bottles containing strong alcohol.

The correspondent of the ura.ru publication, who witnessed the incident, said that the police checked the people’s documents and wrote down their personal information.

Dmitri Chukreyev, a member of the citizens’ council who participated in the raid, said the raid was organized after “reports received from concerned citizens.”

According to Chukreev, the raid is in no way linked to the recent decision of the Russian Supreme Court to ban the LGBT movement.

On November 30, the Russian Supreme Court declared the “international LGBT movement” an extremist organization.

The day after the court’s decision, which had not yet come into force, police raided clubs in Moscow and St. Petersburg where demonstrations targeting sexual minorities were taking place, Meduza reports.
