The restaurant manager was taken into custody the day before yesterday and yesterday charged with manslaughter and injury, endangering the life of others, abandoning a person in danger and selling contaminated or poisonous food.

Although the restaurateur has so far been released from custody, he is under police supervision and has been banned from carrying out any restaurant business pending trial.

If the man were to be found guilty, he would face two to five years in prison and a fine of up to 600,000 euros.

Botulism is a rare but serious neurological disease that is fatal in 5-10% of cases. The disease is caused by botulinum, a potent toxin produced by bacteria that can live in poorly preserved and inadequately sterilized foods.

The disease can disturb vision, prevent patients from swallowing or, in severe cases, paralyze muscles, particularly those of the respiratory system, resulting in death.

An investigation by French health authorities and police revealed that around 25 people were exposed to the contaminated sardines served at the wine bar.

According to the prosecutor’s office, further investigations into the treatment of the victims are underway.
