See how stormy 2023 was in your hometown

The distribution of lightning strikes by month is well characterized by the high number of cloud-to-ground lightning strikes in July and August typical for Estonia. In 2023, the stormiest month of the season was August. Compared to past years, when June was the stormiest month, there was little thunder in June in 2023, accounting for nearly 16% of all cloud-to-ground lightning strikes (3,576). In July and August respectively 25% (5,984) and 52% (12,784). Therefore, more than half of all cloud-to-ground lightning strikes in 2023 were recorded in August. 6% of lightning strikes occurred in September (1,524).

The greatest number of lightning strikes occurred in southeastern Estonia and Pärnu County, with a direction across central Estonia towards Ida-Virumaa. The spatial distribution of cloud-to-ground lightning in 2023 characterizes the long-term average for Estonia well. There was less thunder in the northwestern part of Estonia and on the northern coast.
