New smart rubbish bins have been installed in three locations in Pärnu which, together with integrated solar panels, compress waste, eliminating the possibility of waste entering nature.

The rubbish bins are at the Munamäe skate parkpumping trackI area and Parco Vecchio near the playground. According to the deputy mayor of Pärnu, Irina Talviste, rubbish bins are located in places where many children move.

“We are already waiting to see how children will accept the garbage cans in new places. A technically capable garbage can also speaks up and thanks the person using the garbage can,” Talviste added.

The Procomat WasteMate rubbish bins are 120 liters and have a sturdy metal body, inside which there is a two-wheeled plastic container for waste collection. The waste compactor inside is solar-powered and compresses waste, allowing the container to hold five to eight times more waste than a regular trash can.

The filling of the bin can be monitored from the CleanCityManager web platform. Complete notifications are sent to the garbage disposal via email.

Saving volume leads to numerous economic benefits: the frequency of emptying the container and the costs associated with transporting waste are reduced, which in turn helps reduce CO2 emissions, as emptying trips have to be made less often.

Three smart garbage bins were donated to the city by McDonald’s restaurant. “One of the goals of our waste strategy is to support various solutions that reduce waste and at the same time help move towards more sustainable packaging and measures that help keep the urban landscape clean,” said Vladimir Janevski, CEO of McDonald’s Baltics.

According to the deputy mayor of Pärnu, Irina Talviste, four smart garbage bins were installed in the city last year, which were exploited and justified. “Thanks to these garbage bins, city space is really cleaner and they do not need to be maintained as often as ordinary garbage bins. Now there are even more smart garbage bins in urban space! Here, I invite people to keep our urban space clean and not throw away waste.”
