sometimes at night I wake up and think about him

Nele-Liis Vaiksoo This year the song “Käte umber jää” which participated in the Estonian Song made it directly to the final. “I’ve often been told that it’s like a love song. In a way it is, but not for a person who just doesn’t want to be with you, but for a person who’s already gone the other way ,” says the singer, whose competition story has deep and personal meaning.

“This song is dedicated to a family member. Sometimes I wake up at night and think of him,” says Vaiksoo, whose younger brother died at the age of 16. “For me the story has a pretty bright meaning. I still encounter it secretly in my mind. Our hands are connected, there’s just this frozen thing around them and we can’t touch each other.”

Nele-Liis couldn’t foresee whether it would be a big challenge for Eesti Laulu to present a song with a personal message to the public. “Then you can see it. When I recorded this song, it was [emotsionaalseid] moments though. As an artist, it’s good for a song to have its own emotions. Not that anyone made or produced any kind of song for you.”

Nele-Liis admits that her record in the Estonian song competition is actually brilliant and good. “So that we all remember the people who are in our hearts, who we can no longer touch, but who are still with us and around us,” Vaiksoo says with a beautiful thought.

This year, for the first time in Eesti Laulu, five artists made it directly to the final. As well as Nele-Liis Vaiksoo, Daniel Levi, the band Brother Apollo, the duo Uudo Sepp and Sarah Murray and Carlos Ukareda.
