Disturbing discovery: they transform into aliens on the International Space Station

In the public mind, the image of space stations is that of perfectly clean, sterile environments in which microorganisms cannot establish themselves. But this is far from the case; where there are people, the bacteria that we bring with us from Earth into space also appear. Microbes are also present on the International Space Station and now new research has also observed that, as they rapidly evolve, they are becoming increasingly different from their counterparts on Earth.

Where there are people there are also bacteria.

A pathogenic bacterium began to mutate in strange ways

The unusual mutation on the space station is Enterobacter bugandensis observed on one of its trunks. It is an opportunistic pathogen, meaning it can only cause disease if the host’s immune system is not functioning properly or is struggling with another disease and is therefore more vulnerable.

The bacterium is known for multi-resistantthat is, many antibiotic treatments are no longer suitable to fight it.

For this reason, a more in-depth examination of this bacterial species is important.

In 2018, five strains of this bacterium were identified on the International Space Station, and new research reports the existence of another 13 strains. While previous analyzes had found no significant differences, the current study subjected microbes in space to more in-depth genetic analysis and found that these organisms began to mutate in various ways under the stress of the special environment and now differ both genetically than functionally from those living on Earth.
