Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Ruslan Strilets announced that the occupying government had brought rare specimens from the Askania-Nova nature reserve and its zoo to Russia. “Several Chapman’s zebras, American bison, Przewalski’s horses and David’s deer were taken by the occupants,” Strilets reported. The Environment Minister said that all these species are listed in the Red Book. “In their place, animals such as kana (antelopes), domestic yaks, two-humped camels and a guanaco were brought to the Askania-Nova zoo,” he added. At the end of the summer, the Odessa Journal wrote that about 150 employees of the protected area decided to continue working and caring for the animals despite the occupation. The Russian army has placed its vehicles in the protected area, thus endangering nature.
