Before Einstein published the theory of relativity, there was another theory about the nature of light: the emission theory from Galileo. Now associate professor Martin Valldor at the University of Oslo has looked through previous publications and concluded that the emission theory fits better than the theory of relativity for both thought experiments and observable phenomena – as long as the ether is not involved.

– Just before Einstein came up with the theory of relativity, and since the general theory of relativity, there were many who had begun to doubt this about ether. Then Einstein came along and was declared a genius, and thus no one saw anything more about the emission theory, explains Valldor.

The consequence of the emission theory is that the speed of light is not constant, but relative to the observer.

– If the light source moves away from, or towards, a detector, then the speed of light is relative to the detector, but not from the source. It is a big change compared to the theory of relativity, Valldor explains.

– Another problem is that the general and the special theory of relativity are connected by means of the Lorentz transformation. This means that both theories are based on the fact that the speed of light is constant, says Valldor. Therefore, I use my alternative mechanistic relativity instead, because it does not depend on the speed of light.
