Το να έχει κανείς πρόσβαση στη διαδικασία δημιουργίας ενός μουσείου, είναι πράγματι μια σπάνια εμπειρία. Ακόμη σπανιότερη όμως είναι η εμπειρία της δημιουργίας ενός μουσείου που ενώ δεν έχει ακόμη γεννηθεί, κουβαλά ήδη μια ιστορία αιώνων.
Αυτή την εμπειρία θα προσπαθήσουμε να μοιραστούμε με τους αναγνώστες του ΒΗΜΑ-Science, για χάρη των οποίων εξασφαλίσαμε πρόσβαση στο Μουσείο Μεταλλείας-Μεταλλουργίας Λαυρίου που βρίσκεται στο τελικό στάδιο δημιουργίας του.
Το Μουσείο βρίσκεται στο Τεχνολογικό Πολιτιστικό Πάρκο Λαυρίου, του οποίου τη διαχείριση έχει αναλάβει από τα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 1990 το Εθνικό Μετσόβιο Πολυτεχνείο.

Αρχαία σκουριά
Αν θέλαμε να πιάσουμε το νήμα της ιστορίας από την αρχή, θα έπρεπε να πάμε σχεδόν 3.000 χρόνια πίσω στον χρόνο και να θυμηθούμε ότι το αρχαίο Λαύριο (με τα αργυρομολυβδούχα μεταλλεύματά του) ήταν η μεγαλύτερη πλουτοπαραγωγός πηγή της αρχαίας Αθήνας.
Χάρη στον πλούτο που παρήγαν τα μεταλλεία Λαυρίου χτίστηκε ο Παρθενώνας, χάρη σε αυτά χτίστηκαν και οι τριήρεις που απώθησαν τους Πέρσες στη ναυμαχία της Σαλαμίνας.
Το αρχαίο Λαύριο «έσβησε» μαζί με την αρχαία Ελλάδα, αλλά οι αρχαίες σκωρίες (ή σκουριές), τα υπολείμματα δηλαδή της μεταλλευτικής δραστηριότητας, ήταν το θέλγητρο που οδήγησε στην αναβίωσή του κατά το δεύτερο μισό του 19ου αιώνα.
Η εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρουσα ιστορία του Λαυρίου και των ανθρώπων του δεν εμπίπτει, δυστυχώς, στους σκοπούς αυτού του άρθρου. Θα περιοριστούμε λοιπόν εδώ στην ίδρυση, το 1876, της Γαλλικής Εταιρείας Μεταλλείων Λαυρίου «Compagnie Francaise des Mines du Laurium» από τον ιταλό μεταλλειολόγο Σερπιέρι (J.B. Serpieri), η οποία μαζί με την ελληνική «Εταιρεία των Μεταλλουργείων του Λαυρίου» συνετέλεσαν στην αναγέννηση της πόλης του Λαυρίου.
Συγκροτήθηκε, δηλαδή, το Λαύριο ως μια τ και την αποστολή του ως πανεπιστημίου που επιδιώκει την υψηλή εκπαίδευση, την έρευνα και την καινοτομία.
Τέλος, ο πρύτανης του ΕΜΠ υπογράμμισε τη σημασία της συνεργασίας με τον ιδιωτικό τομέα και την κυβέρνηση, προκειμένου να ενισχυθεί η ανάπτυξη και η καινοτομία στην Ελλάδα. Με αυτόν τον τρόπο, το ΕΜΠ συμβάλλει ενεργά στην οικονομική ανάπτυξη της χώρας και στη βελτίωση της ποιότητας ζωής των πολιτών.

«Η σημερινή εικόνα του μηχανουργείου είναι εν πολλοίς αυτή της τελευταίας ημέρας λειτουργίας του» επισήμανε ο κ. Μπελαβίλας και προσέθεσε:
«Η προέλευση του αρχικού μηχανολογικού εξοπλισμού είναι κυρίως γαλλική και βελγική, προερχόμενη από εργοστάσια του Παρισιού και της Λιέγης. Όπως φαίνεται όμως και από έναν τόρνο που σώζεται και φέρει την επιγραφή Laurium Atelier 1895, το μηχανουργείο ήδη από την πρώτη περίοδο της λειτουργίας του ήταν σε θέση να υλοποιεί μεγάλες κατασκευές».

Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι ο συγκεκριμένος τόρνος βρίσκεται στην ίδια θέση από τότε που δημιουργήθηκε. Όσο και αν αυτό εξυπηρετεί τη φιλοσοφία του υπό διαμόρφωση Μουσείου, θα πρέπει να επισημάνουμε ότι δεν θα ήταν εύκολο να μετακινηθεί ο βαρύτατος αυτός εξοπλισμός, ο οποίος είναι στερεωμένος στο έδαφος πάνω σε ογκώδεις, στην πλειονότητά τους μονολιθικές, πλάκες μαρμάρου.
