Finally good USB 4 NVME SSD housing, thanks to ASM2464 chipset
More and more notebooks and PCs have USB 4 or Thunderbolt ports. However, accessories other than docks that take advantage of the connection are still quite rare.
There are some Thunderbolt or USB 4 NVME SSD cases. In principle, these also work and deliver speeds well above USB 3.2, but in my experience they are sometimes a bit “bitchy”.
By this I mean disconnections and generally unreliable behavior.
This is probably partly due to the Intel chipset these cases use, which is not backwards compatible. For backwards compatibility with USB 3.2, 3.1, etc., an additional chip must be installed.
However, there is now a new chipset for USB 4 / Thunderbolt external SSDs, the ASM2464.
The ASM2464 is a new (early 2024) USB 4 to PCIe controller (and corresponding NVME SSDs) that is also compatible with USB 3.2, 3.1, 3.0 etc.
I now had two NVME SSD cases with the ASM2464 in my hands and yes, they seem very sophisticated! More on this in this article.
USB 4 NVME SSD enclosure from Ugreen and ZIKE
So far I have had two USB 4 NVME SSD enclosures in my hands, the model from ZIKE and Ugreen.
Both models use the ASM2464 chipset and are therefore technically largely identical. However, when it comes to the housing and the cooling, they are extremely different! Let’s look at the two models separately.
