NASA’s advanced supercomputer has generated groundbreaking visualizations that offer a glimpse into the event horizon of black holes, where gravity becomes all-encompassing.
Astrophysicist Jeremy Schnittman from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center spearheaded the creation of these visualizations.
According to Schnittman, simulating the scenarios of falling into a black hole helps bridge the gap between theoretical mathematics and real-world consequences in the universe.
Two distinct scenarios were simulated by Schnittman: one where a camera narrowly avoids the event horizon and is flung back out, and another where it crosses the boundary, sealing its fate.
Unveiling the Supercomputer Visualization
Schnittman collaborated with Brian Powell, another scientist at Goddard, to develop a 360-degree visualization using the Discover supercomputer at the NASA Center for Climate Simulation.

Earwigs and woodlice just got a little more special. New research shows that these creatures can spread seeds by eating them. This would make the wood louse the smallest species ever capable of this.
They are found under every pavement: the wood pigs. And although we in the Netherlands are not particularly impressed by these creatures, things are a little different on the other side of the world. Scientist Kenji Suetsugu contributed to the research. He says: “We tried to find new ecological interactions by focusing on the smallest life forms. For the study, Suetsugu’s team specifically looked at the Silver dragon plantor the Monotropastrum humble. This plant is found throughout eastern Asia and is known for its tiny seeds. However, it was not yet known how the plant could propagate, as the seeds are stored safely in a fruity casing. The researchers therefore decided to collect a certain number of copies of the file Silver dragon plant keep an eye on it by automatically photographing it at night. Next, they looked at the photos to see which animal species liked the fruit produced by the plant the most.
