Box and contents
The box has thumb-pinch tabs that reveal the various contents of the set, and the reverse has insets detailing the opening roof of the van and attachment points for the included terrain.
The packaging is pretty solid and there isn’t much wasted space, probably due to the paper bags. There are four paper bags, and the brown bag contains the stegosaurus parts.
It likewise comes with two instruction manuals and nine sticker sheets.
Build
Opening bag one, the brown bag, reveals a dinosaur and the first of two minifigures, Ben, which we’ll take a closer look at later, but for now we’ll focus on the main part of bag one – the van.
It’s built pretty conventionally, with lots of brick and plate, and the rear bumper was created using 1×2 arch pieces on the sides.
I’ve never seen Chaos Theory, so I’m not sure what the blue thing in the back is. Maybe a bathtub? If so, this is a pretty fancy camper!
The front gets a new printed double cheese sloper for the dashboard, as well as a new color towards the end of the first bag – a pair of dark red 3×3 corner plates. The front grille is attached in a similar way to the one seen on the LEGO City set.
A 2nd minifigure, Sammy, is in a second bag as the van continues to take shape, and the bathtub-like structure in the back is covered by a removable platform that contains a bed and a small table on top.
The wall decoration is done using stickers attached to the inside of 1x4x3 panels, which were tricky to line up properly but thankfully don’t affect the look too much if they are out of place.
Next we’ll assemble the front and rear roofs of the van. All three are built consecutively…
…before being assembled with the Trans Black windshield, a new recolor that also appears in 76966 Dinosaur Missions: Allosaurus Transport Truck. As you can see, the rear is hinged to allow access to the interior.
The final step is to load the wheels, ladder and lots of boxes on top. Be careful when loading the boxes, I used a bit too much force and crushed the roof of the van…
The van is finished, but before we can start working on the surrounding scenery, we need to build some scientific equipment. First, we need to build a trailer for transporting it…
…followed by (presumably) a dinosaur tracker and a microscope. The microscope is a nicely constructed piece, with a 1×1 trans-orange tile representing the amber.
We move on to the attached terrain next, which starts with a nest, and as this bag contains a second dinosaur and a quarter tile representing a broken egg shell, we believe this to be a Velociraptor nest.
