The 16-year-old tennis player made a powerful return at the Australian Open

Andrejeva beat Frenchwoman Diane Parry (72nd WTA) 1:6, 6:1, 7:6 (5), although she was still 1:5 down in the deciding set. The Russian won five games in a row, but then lost serve at 6:5 and the set ended with a quick final game. There, Andrejeva took a 7-2 lead and eventually won 10-5.

During the two-and-a-half-hour match, the young Russian hit five aces, made 32 kills and 37 unforced errors and converted five of 12 break points.

In the top 16, Andrejeva will meet ninth seed Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic, who defeated Storm Hunter 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 last time out.

Andrejeva, playing at the Australian Open for the first time, also reached the fourth round of the Wimbledon Grand Slam last year.

Defending champion Arina Sabalenka (2nd WTA) also reached the top 16 in Australia, beating Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko (33rd WTA) 6:0, 6:0 in just 52 minutes. Sabalenka’s next opponent is Amanda Anisimova (WTA 442nd).

Furthermore, Coco Gauff (WTA 4th), who will meet Magdalena Frech (WTA 69th), and the Ukrainian Marta Kostjuk (WTA 37th), whose opponent is Maria Timofejeva (WTA 170th), reached the round of 16.
