The 2019 African champion suffered a surprise defeat, remained winless for the second consecutive tournament and was restricted to the subgroup – Soccernet.ee

Algeria, two-time African champions in 2019, were limited to the subgroup of the Nations Cup for the second time in a row, where they drew two matches and surprisingly lost to Mauritania 0:1 in the last round.

Algeria reached the round of 16 with two points in the standings and at least a draw would have guaranteed them a place in the round of 16, but Mauritania, after losing the first two matches, took a 1-0 lead to open the half on corner kick by Yali Dellah and maintains the lead until the final whistle.

This meant that Algeria, who finished fourth in the group, had their second consecutive early elimination, while Mauritania secured their first ever win in the Africa Cup of Nations and their first ever place in the round of 16 as third classified.

In the other match of the same group, Angola won 2-0 against Burkina Faso with goals from Mabululu and Zini. Both teams had already secured a place in the top 16. Angola finished first in the group with seven points and Burkina Faso in second place with four points.

Subgroup D:

Angola – Burkina Faso 2:0 (1:0)

36.Mabululu, 90+3. Which ones are they?

Mauritania – Algeria 1:0 (1:0)

37. Yali Dellahi
