The American ice skating judge warned of favoring compatriots | figure skating

The International Skating Union (ISU) announced the decision of the sub-union’s disciplinary committee on Friday, in which American-born referee Doug Williams was admonished for excessively favoring his compatriots.

The ISU writes that the disciplinary commission filed a complaint on July 4 because, in their opinion, Williams had given excessively good evaluations to her compatriots at the World Championship held in the spring.

The American judged the women’s race, in which Isabeau Levito took fourth place. “Although her rating was in the appropriate corridor, she was generally higher than [Levito] closest competitors. After the US skater’s fall, Williams gave away 9.50 points, but that’s impossible. Bottom line: national preference,” the ISU wrote, also citing the results of Amber Glenn (12th) and Bradie Tennell (15th).

In the free skate, Williams rated Levito’s performance with 143.33 points, but the jury’s average rating was 134.62 points. Even when it came to Glenn’s score, Williams had a nearly nine point difference with the other judges, Williams gave Tennell six points more than the other judges.

Niina Petrõkina took ninth place in this competition, becoming the first Estonian skater to reach the top ten at the World Championships. Japanese Kaori Sakamoto became world champion.
