The American space module still doesn’t reach the Moon: what went wrong?

On January 8, NASA’s spacecraft, which launched for the first time in 50 years, will not reach its intended destination.

As reported by the BBC, the private Peregrine lander, launched yesterday from Cape Canaveral in America, cannot land on the Moon due to fuel leakage. It should be noted that the technical problem was reported by Astrobotic Technology, the company that created the module, just a few hours after the launch.

The company initially reported that, shortly after the vehicle’s separation from the Vulcan launch vehicle, an anomaly was discovered that prevented the module from achieving a stable orientation towards the Sun. Therefore the module’s solar panel was not harvesting energy and the battery it was empty. The cause of the problem was a failure in the propulsion system, which resulted in a fuel leak.

After a while, Astrobotic Technologies reported that it was possible to point the device’s panel at the Sun, but Peregrine could only maintain that direction for about 40 hours, after which it would run out of power. Therefore, the mission now has a different goal: to bring Peregrine as close as possible to the Moon’s orbit.
