THE BOOK OF THE WEEK ⟩ A work that overturns everything we know about animals

A sperm whale discovers who he will travel with, a macaw casts a longing glance at his beautiful neighbor, a chimpanzee learns to take advantage of the game. Culture creates a huge amount of unplanned and unplanned knowledge. The whole world talks, sings and exchanges secret messages. Culture is not something that a person can consider unique to himself.

Carl Safina guides us to other cultures. The lives of sperm whales, magnificent bush macaws, and our closest wild relatives, the chimpanzees, unfold before the reader in their own culture. Together with Safina we can think about what culture is. Culture is more primitive in nature than a person’s genotype, which we pass along with our culture to our descendants. Culture is part of the development and existence of the entire Great Nature. This book is an extraordinary journey into the seas of the world, the jungle of South America and the primeval forest of Uganda.

Carl Safina (born 1955) is an American ecologist and acclaimed author. He is a professor of natural sciences and humanities at Stony Brook University and founder of the nonprofit Safina Center.

His research has received several awards and prizes. In addition to articles in The New York Times, TIME, The Guardian, Audubon, Yale e360, and National Geographic, Safina has published ten books. Her first book «Song for the Blue Ocean» (1998) has now become a classic, «Beyond Words: What Animals Think and Feel» (2015) reached the top of the New York Times list. “Becoming Wild”, published in 2020, brought the writer international recognition.
