The council appointed honorary citizens of Tartu – Lõunaestlane

Anne Daniel-Karlsen, Mati Karmin and Enn Lust were awarded the title of honorary citizens of Tartu. Ivar Dembovski, Rait Labotkin and Rufina Noor received the Tartu Täht medal.

Pediatrician and psychiatrist Anne Daniel-Karlsen has dedicated her life to healing the wounds of intimate partner violence. You are the founder of the Maarja school and have also worked with children with mental disorders at the Herbert Masingu school in the Pepler nursing home and currently at the women’s center opened in Tähtvere. In addition to her daily consultancy work, Anne Daniel-Karlsen has been involved in the creation of a network of environmental therapy nursing homes in Estonia.

Everyone in the urban space of Tartu comes into contact with the work of the sculptor Mati Karmin: the fountain of kissing students on the Town Hall Square, the sculpture by Jaan Tõnisson on Gildi Street, the cheerful pig in front of the Roos market building, the Hugo Treffner monument in Ülejõe Park, the Juri Lotman memorial in front of the Tartu University Library and many other works. Also outstanding was Mati Karmin’s work as head of the sculpture department of the Pallas Higher Art School, lecturer and professor.

Academician Enn Lust, professor of physical chemistry, has been head of the Institute of Chemistry at the University of Tartu since 2008. Under her supervision, dozens of doctoral and master’s theses have been defended and she has published more than 350 scientific publications . The heart of Enn Lust was the dissemination of science, the application of scientific results in new technologies and their implementation.

Entrepreneur Ivar Dembovski and his team have built one of the flagships of the woodworking industry, AS RAIT (RAITWOOD), which valorises both wood from Estonian forests and imported wood. This activity has helped increase Estonia’s export earnings and created many jobs. As a long-time member of the Tartu Toome Rotary Club, Ivar Dembovski has fought to ensure that Ukrainian refugees receive the help and psychological support they need in Tartu.

Medical scientist Rait Labotkin is a long-time oncologist at the Tartu University Clinic, who has given many seriously ill patients years of extra life. He is the author of numerous scientific publications and specialist books. Rait Labotkin has also been a collector of Junghans mechanical spring watches for almost 50 years, whose representative collection was presented at the Tartu City Museum.

Rufina Noor has worked at the Vanemuine Theater for over 50 years. In the years 1969–92 he was a ballet soloist in Vanemuine, from 1991 rehearsal and assistant director and from 1994 pedagogue at the Vanemuine Dance and Ballet School. Rufina Noore’s life has been dedicated to preserving the legacy of Vanemuise theater and ballet.

The title of Honorary Citizen of the City of Tartu is a tribute to the exceptional services rendered to the City of Tartu as a life’s work. The Star of Tartu is awarded for special services rendered to the city of Tartu. The badges of honor will be awarded on February 22 at a concert dedicated to the 106th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia at the Estonian National Museum.
