Today Estonia, which played its second match at the Baltic Sea tournament, defeated Finland with the score of 31:28 (13:17).

Estonia turned the game in their favor

Estonia, who beat Latvia yesterday, had problems getting into the match today. Ott Varik opened the scoring for the team in the 3rd minute, when Finland led 3:1. Although Estonia was close to equalising, the final pass was missed several times. The score was 5:6 in the 10th minute of the match. A minute later, Rauno Kopli scored the equalizer. Midway through the first half the Estonian team fought for the lead. Varik led the team with a score of 10:9. Simon Drõgin increased the lead to 11:9 a moment later. The lead disappeared in the 23rd minute, when Finland went ahead 13:12. Soon the distance was 5 goals, at 17:12. Estonia lost the first half 13:17.

In the second half the team worked actively to reduce the deficit. In the 37th minute Mathias Rebas scored 19:20. The team fluctuated between a one- and two-goal deficit until the 45th minute, when Varik scored to bring the score to 25:25. However, Finland took the lead again with a goal. In the 50th minute of the match the score was 26:27. 2 minutes later it was Dener Jaanimaa who brought the score to 27:27. 4 minutes before the end of the match, Mihkel Lõpp scored a goal, leading Estonia 28:27. The boring one-goal success lasted until the final minutes until Sigmar Seermann gave Estonia the lead 30:28 into the last minute of the match. Jaanimaa had the final say and the match ended with the score 31:28.

The most productive Estonian was Dener Jaanimaa with 8 goals. Ott Varik scored 7 goals. Mathias Rebane and Mihkel Lõpp remain on 4 goals. Goalkeeper Armis Priscus was chosen as Estonia’s best player.

“We started sloppily. Lots of turnovers in attack, we missed or hit the target. We gave the ball directly to the opponents so they could launch a quick attack and score easy goals. We were too passive, not aggressive enough, and that’s how it went,” commented Dener Jaanimaa. “In the second half we recovered. We played better and were more aggressive in defense. In the scar [Priskus – toim] he also helped us with tackling. In the second half we were better in every element.”

The Estonian national team has won all their matches so far. Tomorrow the national team will face Lithuania.
