The Estonian men’s handball team participates in the Baltic Sea tournament

“Considering that in the same period we will have the youth meeting, I actually feared that there would be even more problems with the team. Due to holidays and other reasons, there are some cancellations, such as Alfred Timmo and Rasmus Ots, but fortunately we have put together a good team. The end of the year is a difficult time, but it means that even the players who are on the fringes of the national team have the chance to show themselves”, began coach Martin Nodla looking at the team.

The last time the Estonian men’s team met Latvia in the first qualifying round of the World Championship, and there the opponents were defeated with the result of 58:51 in two games. They now begin to prepare for the second round, where they will face Ukraine in mid-March.

“Our main goal is to continue with the things we left against Latvia in the next tournament. Even if there are also some new players, we can quickly present our principles to them and then continue with our plans. Basically we try to look at cooperation of two or three players and maybe we experiment a little with different defensive formations and obviously integrate the semi-rapid transition”, continued the Estonian driver.

“It’s still a bit early to think only about Ukraine, but a small part of the activity is still directed towards official matches. At the moment we don’t know our composition nor that of our opponents, but I believe that with the next tournament we will have again a little clearer picture,” Nodla concluded.

At the same time, new coach Martin Noodla was chosen by handball fans as October’s player of the month, and we chose the Estonian men’s team as the best player of the month after defeating Latvia, as the vote seemed redundant. In this regard, we asked the team driver a question: How does the work of a national team coach look outside of training and match cycles?

“At the end of the evening, it is constant work. For example, here during the Christmas holidays you can answer journalists’ questions and press releases (turnip – ed.). But to be more serious, you have to constantly keep up with the foreign players, without obviously forgetting the local players. Little things like these, organizing who will come this time, who has to skip, who has to replace. A continuous activity in which only a part is what is done in the exercise. Around it, It plays an important role that the rest of the frame around it is also tidy.”

After the tournament in Latvia, the Estonian men’s national team will be able to celebrate New Year’s Eve, and then meet again on January 5th at the training camp in Tallinn, which will be played together with the men’s national youth team founded in 2004.
