The German biathlete achieved his first stage victory at the age of 30 | Biathlon

In the stage of the Biathlon World Cup in Östersund, the German Philipp Nawrath (0; 24.02.0) won the men’s sprint ahead of the Norwegians Tarjei Böd (0; +18.7) and Vebjörn Sörum (0; +19.8).

The German held second position after Swede Sebastian Samuelsson after the first lap, but the Swede left two marks on the standing lap and Nawrath took the lead.

For the thirty-year-old biathlete it was the greatest success of his career in the MK series, because he had never stood on the podium before. Nawrath had also twice achieved fourth place.

An important moment also for Sörum, who occupied the lowest step of the podium on Saturday, and who had not even entered the top 20 of the MK series in his career. It is true that before this season the Norwegian had participated in the IBU Cup series.

In Östersund Samuelsson (2; +26.7), the Norwegians Johannes Dale-Skjevdal (1; +46.6) and Endre Strömsheim (0; +48.2), the French Fabien Claude (1; +48, 7) and the German Johannes Kühn (1; +57.2).

The overall winner of last year’s MK series, Johannes Thingnes Bö, missed two points in the prone position and one in the standing position and had to settle for 18th place (3; +1.35.0).

The Estonians did not score points: Rene Zahkna finished 47th (1; +2.29.3) and Robert Heldna finished 88th (2; +4.11.5).

Before the competition:

In the opening competition of the men’s season, the German biathletes provided a surprise last Sunday, when Roman Rees and Justus Strelow took the two highest places in the standard jump. For Rees it was the first individual MK stage victory of his career, Strelow was on the podium for the first time.

“We had problems with our skis, but we improved a lot. In a way, it was also good, looking back, that we had these problems,” said Rees, who became the leader of the MK with the weekend of opening, to ERR after the victory.

“There have been problems and tensions in the maintenance team. It is a great relief both for us and for the other teams to be able to compete with the Norwegians. We are able to overtake them and if they want to win, they have to count on us. It gives us a good feeling,” added the German.

Rene Zahkna was 36th last week, Kristo Siimer 70th, Marten Aolaid 86th and Raido Ränkel 93rd.

Two Estonians will start today in Östersund, when Zahkna’s starting number is 81 and Robert Heldna takes to the track as the 93rd man.
