Major General Ihtegi has been appointed commander of the Defense League since 19 July 2019. Ihtegi is one of the founding members of the Defense League and began his career as an officer in 1991 in the Defense League.
According to the Defense League law, the government appoints and dismisses the commander of the Defense League on the joint proposal of the Minister of Defense and the head of the defense forces, after consulting the Defense League Elders.
The joint proposal of Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur and the Chief of the Defense Forces, General Martin Herem, is to appoint Major General Ilmar Tamm as the next commander of the Defense League. The new commander will take over the leadership of the Defense League starting from 12 noon on 16 December during the deployment to be held in Vadadus Square in Tallinn. Major General Ilmar Tamme’s length of public service as of December 15 this year is 31 years and eight months.
Major General Tamm is currently the Deputy Commander of the Defense Forces. He has gained international experience managing both the NATO Cyber Defense Cooperation Center and the Baltic Defense College. Tamm began his military service in 1992 as a conscript in the Kalev infantry battalion, from where he went to study at the Finnish Land Defense College. At the same school he also attended the course for senior officers.
He received his level four military education at the Royal Defense College, London. The next commander of the Defense League was the commander of both the individual communications battalion and the communications and information systems department of the General Staff of the Defense, and was the first commander of the NATO Cyber Defense Cooperation Center. Major General Tamm participated in an international military operation in Afghanistan.
He was awarded the Kotkarist Order of Merit 5th Class, the Ministry of Defense Cross of Merit 3rd Class, the Defense Forces Exemplary Service Cross, the Defense Forces Merit Medal for Defense Services, the Defense Forces Merit Medal for National Defense Services and the Defense League White Cross Second Class and the Defense League Special Merit Medal.
