The Jõgeva church, built with state support, will also become a community center | Estonia

Although the official opening of the church and the first service will take place at the end of December, several cultural events will come first in the building’s concert hall.

In this building built on the site of the old Jõgeva water tower, several hundred schoolchildren have already gathered over the weekend and the first concert will be held on Friday. The sanctuary is currently indicated only by the shining cross in the tower and the tuning of the organ currently audible in the hall.

“I would like to hope that the larger works are on one side, but at the same time, the stained glass window and some details are waiting to be assembled and put in their places,” said Georg Glaase, teacher of the EELK Jõgeva parish.

The building was largely built with the support of the state, almost one and a half million was allocated both from the roof funds and from the state budget. About forty supporters also lent a hand, after whom a step on the steps of the church bell tower was named. Riigikogu member Aivar Kokk points out that not only was the church built with taxpayers’ money, but also the community center.

“There are weddings, concerts, funerals and today we see that by next year the house will be rented almost every weekday evening. So this building was expected. I think the city of Jõgeva has a very beautiful building and a large square” , Kokk said. .

“Architecturally it’s not strange at all, but what happens inside is important. However, I have so much to do that I don’t plan to go there myself,” Janek said.

“I like everything, especially the fact that Jõgeva didn’t have a real church before. The other thing is that there are these concert halls. I really like them,” he said

“It’s a very beautiful place and a very beautiful church. The view is beautiful, you can see the cross from very far away,” Pyotr said.

According to the teacher, the Jõgeva community has 54 members. The local school theater and several folk dance groups will also operate in the new premises. So instead of a church, the building was called the House of Fine Arts and also a family center.

“It was created for this purpose, for the community and more generally. Different activities, different age groups, different interest groups,” Glaase said.

The stained glass windows and other missing details should be in place by December 30, when Archbishop Urmas Viilma comes to Jõgeva to consecrate the church.
