The Latvian government is discussing consolidating the fight against corruption under a single body, whose powers will be increased.

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina announced the corresponding plan on Latvian television on Wednesday, Latvian national broadcaster LSM reported.

According to plans, the handling of corruption cases will be concentrated in the Latvian Anti-Corruption Bureau (KNAB). It is also intended to improve the KNAB’s ability to identify major potential cases of corruption and expand the KNAB’s powers and resources to fight corruption.

Silina underlined that plans to transform the fight against corruption in Latvia are based on the recommendations of the Latvian Court of Auditors.

“The state audit also highlighted this [Lätis] there are too many corruption monitoring agencies, but the resources to do so are scattered in different places. We need to strengthen the KNAB, give them more powers, possibly losing part of the Ministry of the Interior [pädevustest]. This improves the practice of handling corruption cases. It should also be easier for the prosecutor’s office, because the practice will become more uniform,” the prime minister said.

Silina added that one of the goals of the Latvian government is to review the functioning of Latvian institutions in general.
