The longest tram line in the world runs along the coast of Belgium, a foreign country

If, for example, you feel like tram travel in Tallinn takes a long time, you can console yourself by knowing that the tram on the Belgian coast takes two and a half hours to travel from one end to the other. And many local users don’t even know that it is the longest tram line in the world.

A very special tram line runs along the Belgian coast from the Netherlands to France. It is known locally as the Coast Tram and at 67 kilometers it is the longest tram line in the world. It takes about two and a half hours to drive from one end to the other through tourist spots and sand dunes.

Peter Buyle, who dreamed of driving a tram as a child, was a sailor for 16 years. The desire to stay at home more, but still enjoy the view of the sea, led him to ride the coastal tram.

“For me it’s a wonderful feeling. I always feel like I’m on holiday. Everyone who moves to this area is retired or on holiday. The atmosphere here is completely different compared to some offices where you have to work within four walls. Here you are always outside, you can see the sea. It’s beautiful,” Buyle said.

According to locals, it is more pleasant to travel on this tram in winter.

“There are a lot of tourists for two months in the summer. The trams run every five minutes. A lot of movement, a lot of people. In fact, it’s also quite dangerous. But in the winter, everything is very calm and quiet,” Buyle said.

Although locals appreciate the long journey along the coast, many of them don’t even know what makes this tram line unique in the world.

“I listened to the BBC and looked online that one of the things to see in Belgium is this tram, because this line is the longest in the world,” Toni said.

“I don’t think that’s true. 67 kilometers is not very long,” Misch said.
