The man who burned the flags handed himself in to the police. He must perform 100 hours of community service

Jan Lants, head of the street crime procedural group of the Lääne-Harju district, said that a criminal case had been initiated for the flag burning on the basis of Article 245 of the Criminal Code, i.e. for l ‘insult against the official symbol of the Republic of Estonia.

After the news published in the media, the men personally contacted the police. Pavel, 42, pleaded guilty to setting fire to the Estonian flag. The court sentenced him to five months’ imprisonment, reduced by three months and 10 days.

The prison term was replaced by 100 hours of community service, which he must complete within a year.

The faceless incident occurred on December 16. A woman described in a social media post at the time how she witnessed what happened.

“I saw how the Estonian flag was lit on the street near my house. I saw it catch fire in a corner and then turn around. Like an experience from another world,” he wrote.

The Criminal Code states that tearing down, breaking, desecrating or otherwise desecrating the Estonian flag, state coat of arms or other official symbols, as well as desecrating the national anthem, is punishable by a fine or up to one year in prison.
