The municipality hopes to revive the city of Kallaste with a new central square | Estonia

As of January 1 this year, the smallest town in Estonia is Kallaste, located in the municipality of Peipsiääre, where 716 people live. The municipality hopes to bring more people to the city by building a magnificent new central square.

The city of Kallaste has become increasingly deserted in recent years. The streets are very quiet and you hardly meet young people. To breathe life back into the city, the municipality of Peipsiääre is planning to remodel the central square area.

The architects designed a new wide street for the central square of Kallaste, with, for example, play structures for children, a sculptural arch along the river for organizing events and steps to the lakeside. The city does not plan to build all of this at once. The first phase, the estimated cost of which is 360,000 euros, should be completed in October. Of these, 90,000 are owned by the Municipality.

Local residents have mixed opinions about the development of the central square.

“It’s not worth it and it’s not necessary. Let him renovate (the building). In the old days it was a department store, during the day it was a canteen and at 6pm it was a restaurant. Let it renovate. /…/ They tidy up the square and see what’s around, like in the landfill,” commented Sergei, who lives in Kallas.

“Do we really need him right now? We are actually going through a difficult time as a country and this money would probably be needed in many different places, here there is no nursery, here there is no school, which would bring people here First there should be an opportunity for children and then maybe something else,” said Elli, a resident of Peipsiääre.

“If there is something good in the city, it is already very good, then the atmosphere is better and other people come and see that Kallaste is a beautiful city, so that some FIE or some company can settle here. Otherwise, the city it will disappear in reality,” said Kallaste resident Tatjana. .

“The central square is changing a lot, there will be many attractions, it’s not just another cover on the street. There are opportunities for children, seniors, families, seniors, young people to be there in the central square,” explained the village head from Peipsiääre, Piibe Koemets.

According to him, the municipality offers entrepreneurs the opportunity to come to Kallaste. “All these small towns have a new look, cafes have been reborn, the number of visitors has increased. The same applies to Kallas. The municipality offers opportunities for private entrepreneurs to come there,” he said.
