The premiere of the musical “The Prince and the Beggar” at the Ugala Theater

A play based on Mark Twain’s famous novel “The Prince and the Beggar” premiered at the Ugala Theater on Thursday, staged by Peep Maasik progerock– in the key of the musical.

You can see two guys on stage: Edward and Tom. Edward is born as heir to the throne of England in the royal house, while Tom is forced by his father to work as a thief and beggar. Then the boys’ paths cross and the prince and the beggar exchange places. According to Alden Kirs and Ringo Ramul, who play the main characters, this story is first and foremost about injustice.

“How come some are born here without being lucky. And some are born here without being very lucky. But we don’t know if they are really lucky or unlucky,” Kirss said.

According to Ringo Ramuli it is in a certain sense a parable. “If you change your clothes, people will only see what clothes you are wearing and how you look from the outside. And not who you really are,” Ramul thought.

As always in fairy tales, the story also has a happy ending. Tom hands over the throne to his friend Edward, who owns it by right. But director Peep Maasik brought the whole scene into the tone of a progressive rock musical, for which the original music was written by Ardo Ran Varres and the lyrics by Donald Tomberg. The scenography was created by Karmo Mende, the dances were set by Rauno Zubko.
