The Raisin of the Year award went to Andry Ervald’s children’s storybook – Sickle

Last year’s most unique children’s book, Aasta Rosin, was announced at the appreciation event held at the Estonian Children’s Literature Center on Thursday, January 4, recognizing the book written by Andry Ervald and illustrated by Kristel Maamägi, “Be who you are. Reading stories” from the Kirimiri publishing house.

“Be yourself” by Andry Ervaldi. Read aloud stories” stands out from last year’s original collection of children’s books in terms of content, form and story. Andry Ervald, who left us today, was one of the most influential storytellers in Estonia. Unfortunately, the stories told orally remain mostly in that specific moment and time, and can later be remembered only by those who happened to hear the stories themselves. The published work offers the opportunity to tell Ervald’s stories to yourself or to your colleagues at the right time,” said Jaanika Palm, a children’s literature researcher. “The stories collected in the book, whether they are about sporting chickens, bears with a passion for travel or cockroaches eager to play hide and seek, are centered on Ervald’s most important phrase: ‘Be who you are!’, therefore helping the reader to find himself.”

The book was published by Andry Ervald’s daughter Maarja Yano and illustrated by his student Kristel Maamägi. “Kristel’s imaginative, fun and bold decorative images make this book a real treat. Plus, the design and layout of the text, which gives the reader a good momentum and pace to convey the meaning of the story,” added Triin Soone , director of the center.

The Rosina of the Year Award is given to a special and exceptional Estonian children’s book published in the previous year starting from 2004, evaluating the book as a whole or just the work of the writer or artist. Prize winners are awarded at the Estonian Children’s Literature Center’s thanksgiving party with a kilo of raisins, a monetary reward and a letter of thanks. Last year the book “Endel ja Kati” by Kadri Kiho and Stella Salumaa received the Aasta Raisina prize, the year before the book “Where the children went” with verses by Indrek Koff and images by Elina Sildre.
