Iraq and Syria

The Riigikogu adopted a decision on the extension of the deadline for the employment of defense forces in the international military operation Inherent Resolve, which allows Estonia to participate next year with up to 110 defense forces in the international military operation US-led Inherent Resolve. The operation focuses on stabilizing the security situation in Iraq and Syria.

Participation in international military operations confirms Estonia’s commitment to contributing to world peace and stability. Participation in the US-led international counter-terrorist operation also supports the excellent alliance between Estonia and the US and cooperation in the field of defense and security. Furthermore, participation in the operation provides the Defense Forces with an important operational result.

Middle East

The Riigikogu adopted a decision on the extension of the deadline for the employment of defense forces in post-conflict peacekeeping operations in Lebanon, Israel, Egypt and Syria, which allows the contribution of up to three defense forces to the peacekeeping operation United Nations peacekeeping in the Middle East next year.

UNTSO is the first United Nations peacekeeping mission that is purely an observation mission. UNTSO’s area of ​​operation is the Middle East, specifically Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, and the mission is based in Jerusalem. UNTSO military observers have been active in the region for decades, preventing the escalation of local conflicts.

The continued participation of the Estonian Armed Forces in UN operations helps to strengthen Estonia’s contribution to UN peacekeeping operations.

Iraq

The Riigikogu adopted a decision on the extension of the deadline for the employment of defense forces in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization mission in Iraq, which allows participation in the NATO mission in Iraq with up to three defense forces l ‘next year.

The activities of NATO’s non-combat training and advisory mission aim to counter threats from the alliance’s south, helping Iraq to build sustainable, transparent, inclusive and effective security structures. In order to increase its capabilities in fighting terrorism, prevent the return of ISIL and stabilize the country, NATO advises Iraqi security structures, providing training in close cooperation with the Iraqi government.
