The sea washed a large amount of logs onto the beach in Tallinn Estonia

On Kakumäe beach in Tallinn it was discovered that the sea had washed a large quantity of logs onto the beach. The logs come from a Portuguese merchant ship that lost part of its cargo on the way from Pärnu to the port of Kotka. It is not yet clear what will happen to the logs washed ashore.

On Friday morning, a man who came to walk his dog on Kakumäe beach found that the beach was full of logs. Most of them are located along the shore, but some are far out in the water.

“After all, some ships were swept away during a storm. The quantity says that it is not a small amount, but it is still half the cargo of a ship that arrived in this sea,” said Valdur Lahtvee, a resident of Kakumäe. who discovered the records.

Lahtvee, who reported his discovery to the state information hotline, wasn’t wrong. The logs lying on the shore in an area about a kilometer long come from the Portuguese-flagged vessel Livland, which lost part of her cargo on January 4 near Naissaare, while en route from Pärnu to Kotka.

“The wind was blowing from the east at up to 20 meters per second, and therefore the further direction of these trunks was relatively undefined. Apparently, whether the fastening broke or was not fastened correctly, it is not known exactly;” Are Piel, head of dispatch at the Transport Authority, said.

According to Piel, the ship lost about 800 cubic meters of wood at sea. Such a quantity could hold approximately 15-20 forestry trucks.

Those logs, which were in the sea and interfering with ship traffic, were removed by the state navy with its own equipment, and about 20 logs were brought in from the sea.

Tallinn must deal with the logs, which are now floating on the shore of Kakumäe beach, but he must first find out whether the owner of the goods is interested in removing the logs from the shore or not. It depends on what happens next from the logs.

“Since this is not waste or a hook, but rather a product whose owner is known, we are in no rush to collect this product, but the first step is to contact the owner of the product,” said Meelis Uustal, the lead nature protection specialist of the Tallinn Environment Agency.

“If they don’t have this interest, it can probably be treated as a hook and local residents can also help to pick it up. But it’s still too early to tell. If we find out what the shop owner’s plans are, then we can move forward,” he said. said Uustal.

So logs washed ashore will likely remain on the beach for some time awaiting their fate.
