“The situation is critical.” Italy fears the collapse of the famous Leaning Tower

The 12th-century Garisenda tower has a four-degree tilt, similar to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The risk of collapse was discovered during periodic monitoring, when it was established that shifts in the normal slope of the tower had occurred and that the quality of the construction material had deteriorated.

Authorities have begun building a 5-meter-high barrier around the tower to prevent further damage to the surrounding area if the 47-meter-high tower were to collapse. The barrier will cost the city 4.3 million euros.

According to the municipal administration of Bologna the situation is critical.

The Garisenda Tower is the shorter of the two famous adjacent towers of Bologna, completed in 1109 and 1119. The second Asinelli tower, 97.2 meters high, is also on a slope, but there is no fear of it collapsing and the tower is open to tourists.
