The streaming platform Viaplay has new owners

According to Helsingin Sanomat, Viaplay needed to find new owners to continue the business. According to Swedish media, one of them has been found. Swedish publication Dagens Industri reported that the decision was made on Wednesday during an extraordinary meeting of the company’s owners in Stockholm.

The financing solution provides that in the future the main owners of the Viaplay group will be the French streaming platform Canal Plus and the Czech PPF. These companies undertake to obtain additional financing for Viaplay in the amount of four billion crowns (356 million euros), among other things through new share issues and loans.

The decision results in a significant financial loss for the company’s current shareholders.

Last summer Ärileht wrote that Viaplay would leave the Estonian market, as the planned business strategy in the Baltics did not meet the company’s expectations. At the time, Viaplay indicated 540 million Swedish crowns (around 46.9 million euros) as the price for leaving the Baltics.

On its paid platform Viaplay it showed, among other things, matches of the Estonian national football team, major football tournaments, UEFA Euroseries such as the Champions League, the English Premier League and the German Bundesliga, as well as Formula 1.
